JENNIFER JOHNSON began her career as a soprano, graduating form the University of New Hampshire with a degree in vocal performance. As a young artist apprentice as CHAUTAUQUA she sang the roles of MICAELA IN CARMEN and MUSETTA IN LA BOHEME. While a resident artist with the MEMPHIS OPERA THEATRE she toured the southern states singing lead roles in AMAHL AND THE NIGHT VISITORS, DON PASQUALE and THE BARBER OF SEVILLE.She also performed in main stage productions with MEMPHIS OPERA, singing the roles of ANINNAin LA TRAVIATA (WITH BEVERLY SILLS) and VALENCIENNE in THE MERRY WIDOW. Ms. JOHNSON debuted in the mezzo-soprano repertoire in a HARTFORD CIVIC CENTER production of HANSEL AND GRETEL, singing the role of the MOTHER. At the same 10,000 seat venue she performed the role of MERCEDES in CARMEN under the baton of VICTOR BORGE with MIGNON DUNN and ROBERT MERRILL singing the roles of CARMEN and ESCAMILLO. Other mezzo roles include AZUCENA in IL TROVATORE, EBOLI in DON CARLO, LOLA in CAVALLERIA RUSTICANA, PRINCE ORLOVSKY in DIE FLEDERMAUS, and the title role in CARMEN. Described as possessing a "BEAUTIFUL AND OPULENT MEZZO VOICE THAT TRANSCENDS THE WRITTEN NOTE AND SPEAKS DIRECTLY TO THE AUDIENCE", Ms. Johnson is equally adept and comfortable in concert and oratorio repertoire. Frequently performed oratorios include MESSIAH, SAINT- SAENS CHRISTMAS ORATORIO, VIVALDI "GLORIA", AND BACH "SAINT MATTHEW PASSION".In concert, she shines in repertoire of American composers, including BERNSTEIN, GERSHWIN, COLE PORTER, AND JOHN JACOB NILES. She also produces and performs in concert venues, with her popular " A TASTE OF OPERA" featuring beloved arias, duets and opera scenes. |
